NYC WINTER LANTERN FESTIVAL PROJECT

NYC Winter Lantern Festival is an absolutely amazing Chinese-style lantern festival in Staten Island, Queens, and Long Island in New York. The spectacular lighted display features a gift shop, a ton of performers, over 40 light installations, and a holiday area! The themes for 2021 — they change yearly — were Illuminate the Farm and A Bug’s Night. I was tasked with making two illustrated posters meant to be used for promotion all over New York City and online.

For this project, I wanted all of the illustrated lights to feel very warm and glowy. For the background, I used a cooler-toned navy blue to portray the feeling of winter and warmer tones everywhere else to give off a sense of coziness. I also used Copic-like textures and handwritten drawings and lettering because NYCWLF has a really fun and whimsical logo and marketing, and I wanted these to go along with that!
